At Joe Web site design, we're all about helping small businesses create websites that are fast, user-friendly, and, most of all, effective. A key component to improving website speed is optimizing your images. But with so many methods available, how do you know which one works best?
To help answer that question, we've put together a simple, side-by-side comparison of four popular image optimization techniques. Whether you're just starting out or looking for advanced techniques to speed up your website, this test gives you a real-world look at the impact each method can have.
You'll explore four different approaches to image optimization, each on its own page:

tag to deliver the best possible performance for each browser and device. On each page, we've placed a large hero image and a gallery of three smaller images—exactly the same in visual quality but delivered using different optimization methods. By comparing the pages, you'll see how image file sizes shrink and load times improve as you move through the techniques.
At the end, we provide detailed speed test results for each test page, generated using Chrome's Developer Tools. So you can see the direct impact of each optimization method.
Feel free to start with the No Optimization page to see how unoptimized images affect speed and performance. Then, work your way through the more advanced techniques to see how easy it can be to improve loading times. Finally, check out the Test Results and Summary page to see all the data in one place.
Important Note for Replicating Our Test Results: The first four of the five pages in this image speed test were conducted using a non-SSL secured environment. Those four pages had caching and compression disabled with the .htaccess file. And they did not have the benefit of a CDN. We wanted the most accurate measurements of initial page loading speed. The fifth test page utilized all of those features.
To replicate the results shown on this page, please visit that non-secured testing site directly at advertisinggarage.com/imgspeedtest
The files hosted here on the secured joeinfo.com site will load faster due to SSL, CDN, compression, and caching optimizations.
